City Council Work Session
Discuss Courtesy Benches
Sarah Greene, Administrative Assistant II
Courtesy benches, typically containing advertisements, are placed by private companies for the convenience of local bus patrons and members of the general public.
At this time, the City does not have a formal process to monitor installation and maintenance of benches placed in the public right of way or near mass-transit stops. Staff would like to gather City Council feedback on the need and/or desire for such facilities so a formal process can be developed to administer their placement in the right of way. Discussion points could include:
Whether or not the benches serve a necessary public purpose.
How they may affect the safe flow of traffic and/or pedestrian movements when placed in the public right of way, or interfere with adjoining property use.
Should there be controls on the ad content?
Are there appropriate corridors and/or locations for their placement?
If Council is open to the placement of courtesy benches in the public right of way staff will develop a process by which they can be reviewed and/or permitted.
This topic is for informational purposes, and to solicit Council feedback on the need for courtesy benches in the public right of way.
