Consider Approval of Contract with the Minnesota Blue Ox for Usage of the Coon Rapids Ice Center
Tim Himmer, Public Works Director
Staff is seeking City Council approval of the attached contract with the Minnesota Blue Ox for ice and facility usage at the Coon Rapids Ice Center for the 2017 - 2018 season.
The Minnesota Blue Ox is the newest franchise of the United States Premier Hockey League (bio attached). They contacted the City seeking an agreement on making the Coon Rapids Ice Center their home facility. The Ox is requesting non-prime ice time, which works well as this is typically the time of day when no usage is occurring on the ice (noon to 2pm). They would also need a dedicated locker room and peak ice time for approximately 20 - 25 games per season, both of which can also be accommodated. Staff has been working on the details of contract terms and has solicited feedback from the existing main users of the facility (Anoka-Hennepin School District and Coon Rapids Youth Hockey Association), which are extremely supportive of the proposed partnership.
The attached contract between the City and the Minnesota Blue Ox is submitted for City Council's consideration. This agreement is modeled after and consistent with those approved for the other main facility users. Staff and the Ox are still working on details related to advertisement and marketing, and that information would either be available for consideration on July 5th or in a subsequent amendment to the contract.
Staff recommends that the City Council approve the proposed Minnesota Blue Ox contract for usage of the Coon Rapids Ice Center during the 2017 - 2018 season.
