City Council Work Session
Discuss Potential Renaming of Boulevard Park
Ryan Gunderson, Recreation Coordinator
Later this year the space adjacent to the Coon Rapids Ice Center (working name "Boulevard Park") will be developed into a park and splash pad area. There has been some discussion to date about the final name for this new park and staff is seeking Council direction on the desired process for naming the park.
At the November 29, 2016 City Council work session Council provided direction on a process to solicit public input for the potential renaming of Boulevard Park. The policy for naming criteria (attached) and process for submittal was advertised through various City publications. A compilation of submittals is attached for consideration. This list was reviewed and discussed by the Park and Recreation Commission on July 10th, with their recommendation being the name Boulevard Community Park.
Their reasoning was that the park name should be welcoming and inclusive to the community as a whole, while still including the Boulevard component as a landmark location. They were not interested in naming this space after specific individuals and felt those would be better recognized in a future “volunteer memorial” or by the current practice of memorial trees, benches, or specific amenities within the park system. They further expressed interest in a future Veteran’s Memorial in this park space along Coon Rapids Boulevard, but did not feel that naming the park in this manner was necessary. Ultimately, the naming policy gives final authority to the City Council.
Staff is seeking City Council direction on the final process to advance the potential renaming of this new park space.
