City Council Regular
Adopt Resolution 19-98 Accepting Victim Service Grant from MN Department of Public Safety/Office of Justice
Kim Reid, Administrative Legal Assistant
Staff recommends City Council accept a victim service grant from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) Office of Justice Programs (OJP).
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS), Office of Justice Programs (OJP) sought proposals from county and city attorney offices to fund a victim witness advocate position. This position provides services to crime victims, ensuring crime victim rights are upheld, and increasing victims' safety and access to services that meet their needs. The funding would enhance, not replace, existing services for crime victims by having the victim service staff be in court with an attorney to improve victim contact. Further the funding would help prosecutorial agencies meet statutory requirements by enhancing information/referrals for victims and providing victims greater assistance and advocacy. The victim service staff will be under the supervision of the City Attorney. Under the proposal, state and federal funding is available to directly service the needs of crime victims. The grant will provide $70,000 per year for a two year period beginning October 2019.
This is a two year renewal grant. We have had the same grant for the period of October 2017-September 2019. During that time period we served 1,337 crime victims.
Staff recommends adoption of Resolution 19-98 to Accept Victim Service Grant from MN Dept. of Public Safety/Office of Justice Programs.
